Welcome to Building Department
On behalf of the staff and students of the Department of Building, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos, I most heartily and warmly welcome you to our prestigious institution, the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride.
The Faculty of Environmental Design (now Environmental Sciences) started in 1971/72 academic session with eighteen (18) students for the Bachelor of Environmental Sciences (B.E.S) programme. In 1980/81 session, the Faculty introduced the six-¬year professional degree programme that restructured the Faculty into three interdependent and mutually cooperating Departments of Architecture, Building Technology (now Building) and City and Regional Planning. In view of this restructuring, Building Department started in 1980/81 session. The total number of students currently enrolled in all levels of B.Sc Building Programme is three hundred and fifty four (354). In 1986/87 session, the Department of Building Technology was moved into the Faculty of Engineering where it was renamed Department of Building Engineering but in 1988/89 session, through an order from NUC, the Senate of the University brought the Department back into the present Faculty of Environmental Sciences. At present, the Faculty comprises the following four Departments, namely Architecture, Building, Estate Management and Urban and Regional Planning. The Quantity Surveying undergraduate programme took off in the Department of Building in 2002/2003 academic session and has produced five sets of graduates already while the sixth set will graduate at the end of the 2012/2013 academic session. The Department also runs postgraduate programmes in Construction Management and Construction Technology at M.Sc level as well as Project Management at Master’s level on part-time basis. In addition M.Phil./Ph.D. programme is also available in the Department with specialization in Construction Management. The first batch of Building Students in the six¬-year programme of B.E.S., B.B.TECH graduated in 1987 in the then Department of Building Engineering. The first batch of M. Sc in Construction Management students graduated in 1985 while first batch of PhD students in the Department graduated in 1991. The Academic Advisors, Head of Department and other staff in the Department of Building are always available to help and guide the students. In order to provide the atmosphere and opportunity for intellectual growth and development of all the students, there are full-time and Associate Lecturers who are capable of carrying out rigorous and non-doctrinaire academic leadership. The Department started with two academic staff in 1981 and the staff nominal roll increased to six in 1986 and at present there are twenty-eight members of staff on ground.
